Quoted by Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson in an interview at the Frankfurt auto show, “The new vehicles will be more expensive. I think the company has no future if we are targeting mass market products. The new vehicles will be more expensive, but only if they deliver something the consumer finds attractive.” The increase in the company car’s prices will not only be a huge gap from previous Volvos, but must also boost United States sales all together for the company. Arriving in 2015, the new and redesigned 2014 XC90 crossover will become the first of the increased price gap competing with Europeans. It will have a starting base price of $40,615. The strategy Volvo will be examining in the United States businesses will be in the upcoming months. This strategy is a must because Volvo’s sales in the United States had decreased 6 percent (44,005) in the first eight months. The goal for the company is to reach or exceed a sale of 100,000 by or before 2020. Samuelsson also stated that since the brand is viewed as both safe and environmentally friendly with many improvements, “people will pay the price. Nothing will be excluded. It’s fair to say I am not very satisfied. We have to come back in the U.S. market.”
